Obituary

Louvella "Lou" Shirey, caring mother, grandmother, sister and friend, left this world on February 4, 2022, at the age of 74. She was born to Arlie and Bessie (Reed) Skaggs on February 20, 1947 in Oark, Arkansas where she lived until graduating school in 1965.  After graduation Lou moved to, Springdale, then to Iowa, Alabama, and later back to Springdale to be near her brothers and sisters.  Upon her return she began working for Tyson almost immediately.  Lou was devoted and dedicated to ensure that her job was done and done well.  She worked for Tyson for over 17 years.

Lou is survived by three children, Karen Hopson and husband Bill of Harker, Texas, John Curtis and wife Crystal of Gentry, Arkansas, Lavonda Shirey of Jacksonville, Florida; ten grandchildren:  Ethan, Adrian, Alex, Jacob, Joshua, Joseph, Judah, Rodney, Christina and Douglas; three sisters, Robbie Skaggs of Springdale, Lura Madewell and husband Lonnie of Baldwin, Arkansas, Leta Mae White and husband Rod of Springdale, four brothers, Loyd Skaggs and wife Nancy, David Skaggs and wife Lynda, and Doyle Skaggs all of Springdale, Benny Skaggs and wife Dorothy of Farmington, Arkansas; as well as many cousins, niece's and nephews which she loved dearly.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Arlie and Bessie, three sisters, Zada, Ada and Carolyn, and two brothers, Denver and McArthur.

The simple pleasures of life brought Lou great Joy.  She had a big family and  loved spending time with them.  Her later years were spent at The Maples which she called home.  She looked forward to  family visits which usually ended in singing and laughter.  Lou kept her songbook in hand, ready to go, so she was always ready to sing to family, staff, residents, or just anyone who would listen.  Staff referred to her as their little "songbird".  Lou always sang with passion and purpose, sharing her love for the Lord.  She had the ability to make everyone feel like family.  Her pleasant personality was contagious to anyone around her.  Even in her last days, she kept everyone laughing.
She made it her job to ensure her nephew, James, who also lived at The Maples, had his daily Dr. Peppers.  On  Bingo nights you could always find Lou set up and ready to win.  She loved Bingo so much that she worked all the way up to being "The Caller".  While she enjoyed visiting, she quickly informed visiting family that Bingo was NO PLACE TO TALK!!!  It was serious!!
Dominoes was another past-time Lou enjoyed. Nurses and staff at The Maples loved Lou.   She was their little mother hen always worrying about everyone else and was ready to help if needed.
Lou missed her mom and dad and longed to be with her Lord and Savior so we, her family, have chosen to honor her with a CELEBRATION OF LIFE.  Her journey is complete.  The Bride has been united with the groom!
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the Celebration at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 9, at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment will be 2 p.m. at Oark Cemetery .
Lou's love of life didn't come to an end with her passing.  She left us with many "golden nuggets" to carry with us on our journey forward.  While we will miss Sweet Lou we are comforted to know she is now resting peacefully in the arms of Jesus.  We will continue to honor her legacy by living our lives to the fullest for Christ, whom she loved dearly.
