James Delmer Fowler, aka Jim, of Springdale, Arkansas, died on July 10, 2026 at the age of 96. Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Antonia Ban-eg Fowler. He leaves behind his step-son and daughter-in-law, Pete Argao and Molly Vigour of New Orleans, LA, his step-daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Alan Altom of Tontitown, AR, and his two sisters, Betty Fowler of Gainesville, GA and Evelyn Ledford of Canton, GA. He was a cherished dad, brother, uncle, grandpa and friend and his kindness and generosity will be deeply missed.
Jim was born on May 18, 1930 in Roy, Georgia to Reid Fred Fowler and Nellie Mae Jones. He was the eldest of 10 siblings and, at the age of 18 and before finishing high school, he left home to join the US Army. Because of his extraordinary memory, Jim told many stories of his time in the service. He was part of the US Army Signal Corps as a US Army Sergeant stationed in Europe during the Korean War. He came of age while he was stationed in Paris, and it was there, he started his lifelong love affair with wine and cheese. While he was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, he purchased his favorite car, a white 1964 Porsche 356C coupe. When he was 24, he took USAFI classes and earned his GED. After his honorable discharge, he had a 32-year career with Hughes Aircraft Company that began as an electronics technician and ended as a project head with the ground systems group. During his time with Hughes, he used company benefits and the GI Bill to earn his Bachelor of Science in Administrative Science from Pepperdine University. At the beginning of his retirement, while living in southwest Florida, he enjoyed fishing off his boat around the surrounding islands and volunteering as a member of the Power Squadron. He was an active member of the American Legion for over 40 years, while living in California, Georgia, South Carolina, and Arkansas. He loved to travel and visited many countries in South America, Europe, and Asia, with his favorite destination being Israel, for historical and religious reasons. He also traveled to every state in the US with his favorite places being the city of San Diego, and Yellowstone and Everglades National Parks.
Jim will be buried with military honors at the Fayetteville National Cemetery in Fayetteville, AR. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home (479)751-2444.
