IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Archie Howard
Hartgrave
May 1, 1948 – August 6, 2022
On the evening of August 6, 2022, Archie Howard Hartgrave of Fayetteville, Arkansas, quietly made his journey to Heaven to join his Lord and Savior and the other family members already there. He was born May 1,1948 in Stratton, Nebraska to Archie Norman and Elma Jean Keller Hartgrave. His dad had recently re-enlisted in the Air Force and the family lived in Puerto Rico, Louisiana, Ohio, Arkansas and Colorado where Archie graduated from Englewood High School in 1966.
In March of 1968 Archie enlisted to the Army and served in Vietnam where he was assigned as a clerk typist for a company of helicopter pilots. Once he learned some of the flights to deliver needed radio equipment to outposts and search and rescue missions for wounded soldiers had to be cancelled due to a shortage of door gunners, Archie requested and received permission to volunteer as a door gunner on upcoming missions. Records show he flew 30 missions within the last 60 days of his time there, earning him a commendation and the Air Medal which states, "Specialist Four Hartgrave distinguished himself by meritorious achievement while participating in sustained aerial flight in support of combat ground forces in the Republic of Vietnam...By his determination to accomplish his mission, in spite of the hazard inherent in repeated aerial flights over hostile territory, and by his outstanding degree of professionalism and devotion to duty, he has brought credit upon himself, his organization, and the United States Army."
After returning home to Colorado, Archie worked as an electrician for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and later for the United States Mint in Denver. He married Jessica Leyba in 1975. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, working on his Mustangs and other various vehicles.
Archie was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Betty Jones and Shirley Severance. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Jennifer and husband Mike Gaskin and their children, Alexia, Tyler and Kaitlyn of Arvada, Colorado; sister, Norma Curl of Springdale, Arkansas, brother, Benjamin Hartgrave and his wife Kelli of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, sister, Belynda Hartgrave of Hindsville, Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews.
Military memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2022 at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
The family wishes to offer special appreciation to the floor nurses and CNAs at Katherine's Place for their loving care of Archie these past two years. Archie is missed greatly by the ones who knew and loved him.
